Snuff Box

Since it’s introduction by the Portuguese in the late 16th century, tobacco has played an important role in Africa beyond casual practice. Snuff has, over time, also acquired social and even ritual significance, in marriage, settling disputes, divination or tributes to the ancestors. Beautiful containers have been created to hold snuff and these are Ndau’s tribute to the tradition, created by master designer Christie Halsted.

These snuff boxes are composed of springbok horn and black ebony wood adorned with hand lost wax cast sterling silver sea urchin spines, starfish, crab claw and seashells and hand carved fishtails by Justice Ncube with handmade silver detailing and agate stone bead.

They are part of the bespoke collection created for The Malcolm Ainscough Collection, with the profit donated to the educational, cultural and environmental work undertaken by The Jafuta Foundation in Ndau's home town and surrounds of Victoria Falls.

Please note that our prices are not inclusive of any import duties applicable in your country, so please confirm what these are with your relevant authority prior to placing an order.
As these remade of springbok horn, they may require a special import permit into your country. Please confirm this prior to ordering.
